How to prevent floor screed cracks in two ticks

The Screed Scientist website outlines the importance of preventing cracks in your floor screed. The process is actually quite simple and you need to take some simple crack prevention measures as per the diagram below.

We visited a recent project to see just how difficult this process is.
At about halfway through the 130sqm project, the screeder inserted some trowel cuts.

So how long did this take? A little bit of planning and the actual cuts probably took less than a minute. And the excuse for not doing them is?
A little bit of time can really save you huge amounts of energy, effort and costs later on in terms of repairs.

We spotted a new trowel in town!

For all of us who are looking for the secret concoction for the perfect screed, an unassuming ‘little trowel’ might just be able to provide us with the answer. The friendly little trowel knows all the ratios and proportions for the perfect screed mix, and has a treasure trove of tried and tested screeding methods and techniques that could lead us to the formula of the perfect screed.
Rumor has it that he is on a mission to put an end to the age old issue of screed failures in the UK, and has embarked on an educational initiative to reach out to the huge population within and outside the floor screeding industry and help educate the masses on how to achieve the best results from screeds!
In appearance, he is distinctly one of the creed of the old screeders’ trowel. But what we love about him is he takes his job quite seriously as the face of the new Screed Scientist website- a much needed educational initiative for the screeding industry!
The said little trowel is the mascot of Screed Scientist, and comes dressed appropriately for every occasion, making sure he conveys the message that he carries effectively.
When he is mostly seen donning a white coat and spectacles while representing the Screed Scientist, he appears safely clad in his work outfit, complete with hi-vis jacket, helmet and goggles when he appears alongside the screed tips and advice that are to be followed at the site. Now then, we agree health and safety is definitely not to be taken lightly on the work site!
You might even spot him in the tutor’s gown and hat when he is out giving the screed tuitions - prepared by none other than the real Screed Scientist himself.
Now, in case you are wondering who the Screed Scientist is, he is one of the authorities on screeding in the UK, the Managing Director of industry leaders- CSC Screeding Ltd, Mr. Spencer Warner.
Mr. Warner is the real voice behind the friendly little trowel, and the Screed Scientist website is part of his ongoing efforts to create an interactive educational platform for creating awareness regarding the best practices in floor screeding. When expensive screeding projects fail due to minor negligence or lack of knowledge from the part of the screeders, site workers or the clients who are unaware of the important measures to be followed to achieve the best results, we are sure this initiative could make a big difference in the floor screeding industry.
Way to go Screed Scientist!

Top tips for choosing a good screeding contractor

There are several things to be considered while choosing a good screeding contactor. From the quality of screed to service and costs, just about everything could go wrong with a bad choice. We have a few pointers that might help make your task easier, and help you make a careful choice.
1. Do not fall for the ‘lowest price’ snare
When prices do indeed matter, it is important to keep in mind that the’ low price’ tags do always come with a price. Inexperienced workers, cheap material, poor service and in turn poor quality could be the cost you could end up paying for the marginal price discount.
Rather than the low price quotes, it is important to look for a screeding contractor who can give you ‘value for money’. This would mean a contractor who can offer you good quality and service at a price you can afford.
2. Experience matters
High quality screeding requires skill and expertise, and the better trained and experienced the workers, the better the quality of the screed you can expect. It would be wise to look for screeding contractors who have been in the industry for a long time, and have a skilled work force with hands on experience in working on varied projects.
3. Expertise in the installation of the particular screed systems
Every screed system is different. To get the best results from specialized screeding systems or screeding products, it is important to look for certified contractors who are experienced in the installation of the particular screed system or product. For instance if you intend to use modified screed systems like FlexiDry it is ideal to go for FlexiDry approved contractors who have workers specially trained in using the product.
4. References speak volumes
Asking for references can help you the make the eliminations in the names you have short listed, right at the outset and can go a long way in assessing the competence of the contractor. It is important to look at the projects they have worked on earlier, their work history, the quality of service they have offered, if they have delivered on time and within the budget. A good screeding contractor would have several references ready at hand.
5. Check for conformity to industry standards and health and safety measures
It would be beneficial to verify whether the contractor complies with industry standards and has a good health and safety record. This can help in ensuring a safe working environment.
6. Remember to do your homework on industry lingo
It is very likely that you might get baffled by the industry jargons and technicalities that the contractors use. Doing a bit of research and developing an idea about the various industry terms and usages will help to avoid confusion and facilitate easier communication.

Pan mixers: The perfect solution for work sites with difficult access

Got the screed mix right? – You are half way through to achieve the perfect screed. But, if access to the site is difficult, the quality of the screed and ultimately that of the entire flooring could get compromised unless the screeder is equipped with the right tools and machinery. Of the several methods of screed mixing ranging from hand mixing to the use of free fall mixers and forced action mixing with screed pumps and pan mixers, the portable pan mixers are the ideal solution for obtaining high quality, homogenously blended screeds when there is constraint of space or difficulty in accessing the work site.
When hand mixing is practical for very small areas, it is impossible to achieve evenly mixed screeds of the desired quality for vast areas using this method. Free fall mixers are the other alternative that many screeders use for the mixing bigger batches of screed. But, not only are these insufficient to obtain a homogenous screed mix, the screed mix produced by free fall mixers are more prone to balling and crush easily under impact.
Forced action mixers on the other hand produce high quality, homogenous screed mixes quickly and efficiently. When screed pumps are ideal for forced action mixing of large quantities, pan mixers are sufficient for forced action mixing of smaller quantities.
Pan mixers are also extremely useful for mixing screeds in areas where access is difficult. As pan mixers are portable and easy to transport, they can be used to produce the same high quality forced action screed mixes at sites where the big screed pumps cannot be operated.
Fast drying floor Screeds such as FlexiDry are found to perform at its peak when mixed effectively using forced action mixers. FlexiDry approved contractors like CSC Screeding Ltd find they achieve excellent results with FlexiDry by using screed pumps and pan mixers for force action mixing of their screeds.
